LASIK refractive surgery is widely touted as a relatively risk-free route to 20/20 vision – but is there more to ‘flap-and-zap’ surgery than meets the eye?
Annabel Kantaria reports.

M. Farooq Ashraf, MD, FACS
Medical Director
The Atlanta Vision Clinic

"Thank you for considering the Atlanta Vision Clinic for your LASIK surgery. There are many centers in the Dubai area performing LASIK; however, I am certain you will not find a center that offers a combination of excellent medical care at an exceptional value as we provide at the Atlanta Vision Clinic.”

Dr. Ashraf is a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in cornea and refractive surgery, including laser vision correction.

  • Personally performed over 35,000 LASIK procedures
  • One of the most experienced surgeons in the country using the Bausch and Lomb Technolas excimer laser.
  • Extensive experience with the excimer laser even prior to the FDA approval while on faculty at the Johns Hopkins University.
  • Impressive academic background and extensive research has resulted in the publication of numerous articles in scientific journals and major textbooks on LASIK

As a fellowship trained corneal specialist, Dr. Ashraf also has extensive experience in corneal transplantation, cataract surgery and anterior segment microsurgery.

After completing his medical degree at the Medical College of Ohio, Dr. Ashraf went on to the National Clinics of Health in Bethesda Maryland for a one-year eye research fellowship. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the George Washington University in Washington D.C. He then went on to Johns Hopkins for advanced training in corneal and refractive surgery. After completing a corneal and refractive surgery fellowship at the world-renowned Wilmer Eye Clinic at the Johns Hopkins University in 1996, Dr. Ashraf remained on staff as Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology. His duties included not only performing surgery, but also teaching other doctors how to perform microsurgery and refractive surgery. His surgical experience not only includes the correction of natural refractive errors, but also restoring damaged eyesight caused by trauma or previous surgery. After relocating to the Atlanta area, Dr. Ashraf founded the Atlanta Vision Clinic to offer world class eye care here in Atlanta. He is one of only a handful of fellowship trained refractive surgeons in the Atlanta area.
